| Wake up. Tour. Turn around. Go home. |
Waking up early to check weather was no fun as it was snowing a little bit all the way to the valley bottom and no visibility whatsoever. Back in the sleeping bag for another few hours and upon waking up for the second time it is suddenly different. The cloud cover has broken up some and we are seeing patches of blue. While it looks like it can close up anytime we decide to get going and have a shot at Skåla, the reason we are here in the first place. We hurry through breakfast, take a few pictures of my teddybear and pack up the tent. ![]() In Fosnes close to the Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalparksenter we drive up a little-used logging road for a hundred metres or so before parking the car and getting ourselves organized. Skis on the backpacks we start walking further up the logging road before taking off on a smaller path leading straighter up the valley towards the snowline. ![]() Eventually there is enough snow that it is easier to walk on skins and shortly after that we reach the treeline just about where the valley flattens a bit and open up, giving us a nice albeit slightly cloudy look up towards Skåla. Yesterdays rain and snow combined with very variable temperatures seem to have been pretty hard on the snopack on the sides of this valley as there has been massive avalanches coming down, forcing us to walk through som very large runouts. At least it is considerably colder today and as such the valley sides seem safe enough that we continue up the valley; as soon as possible getting onto a little ridge along the valley floor getting allowing us to be away from potential runout zones. ![]() Getting to the steeper part of the valley we realize that the cluds have started closing in on us and visibility is detoriating. It looks like it might even start to snow soon. Lookign at the rather large glacier we will have to walk on to get up towards Skåla we decide that it is a no-go; we are not really into walking around there blinded by snow. Refusing to call it a day we instead turn up another smaller valley on the lft hand side looking like it might give us a nice little run back down between small bushes and stuff, and allowing for us to ski on top of some small ridges making it seem safe enough to be worth considering even in bad visibility. ![]() After another hour of walking we reach a small bowl that we will have to traverse in order to continue up the valley. Not really feeling all THAT confident with the snow we decide that we have no apparant need to cross that bowl with the current conditions; so we start getting dressed up for the descent instead. By now there is a slight snowfall and not a whole lot of contrast to ski by; so a gentle run down among the small shrubs and bushes seem the most tempting option. ![]() After eating lunch we take off and have a nice cruising run down in the thin layer of fresh snow that had been falling overnight; somewhat heavy but pretty smooth. Nice. Getting down to the treeline we fool around with the camera for a bit; trying to get some nice shots with the Hjelle lake below us and all. Pretty hard with the light we have (or don't have..) but at least it's fun. Finally down by the car we drive down to Stryn to check the wather forecast; but upon learning that we are looking at another two days of rain and snow we throw in the towel and head south for Oslo. |
